From the late 19th century to the early 1950s, containers were primarily transported on land via trucks or trains. It wasn't until 1955 that Malcolm McLean gradually introduced the concept of containerized maritime transport. In 1956, Malcolm founded the container shipping company Sea-Land, which collaborated with shipping companies, freight railway companies, and truck drivers to establish standards, enabling seamless transportation of containers across different modes.

Simultaneously, on the foundation of booming container terminals, organizations such as MARAD (Maritime Administration), American Standards Association, and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) gradually emerged. In 1964, international universal standards for containers were formulated. It wasn't until 1966, after various parties reached consensus, that international container shipping transitioned from an ideal to a reality, leading to prosperity. This initiative also facilitated the development of multimodal transport, shaping the modern logistics system.

Before the emergence of shipping containers, goods from different countries or regions faced obstacles in seamless transit, hindering globalization's potential for lowering prices through global production. Despite current challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions affecting container shipping costs, the immense convenience brought by containers remains evident when compared to the era before their widespread adoption.

Furthermore, amid pressing environmental concerns like climate change, shipping containers, although less attention-grabbing than other eco-friendly technologies, have emerged as environmental forerunners in the freight transportation industry due to their standardized nature.

Significantly Reduced Freight Costs

In terms of time efficiency, shipping containers have drastically minimized the time spent on cargo handling at ports by front-loading the sorting and classification process. The increased punctuality of larger container ships and scheduled services has substantially lowered the cost per unit of time.

Regarding spatial efficiency, the programmability of cargo loading sequences on vessels has been enhanced with containerization. Through the standardization of shipping volumes, the integration of information technology, and logistical strategies, people can now monitor cargo and transport statuses. This has made intermodal transportation by sea and land possible, fostering the development of modern logistics and reducing transportation costs.

In addition, as a storage unit, shipping containers eliminate the need for frequent “rehandling” processes in commodity circulation, significantly reducing labor costs. Furthermore, with the use of technologies like RFID and GPS, tracking containers has become convenient, minimizing the risk of goods theft and losses.

02. Simple yet Robust Construction with Diverse Applications

Currently, there are 13 international standard container specifications, all with the same width. There are four length variations and three height variations. Common dry cargo containers typically appear as giant rectangular prisms, featuring four pillars, six sides, and eight corners. As containers endure multiple handling and journeys across turbulent seas, these components adhere to strict manufacturing standards. From an external perspective, containers are divided into front, rear (door end), and side panels.

Containers can also be categorized based on different criteria. For instance, based on the materials used in the container's main body, they can be classified as aluminum alloy containers, steel containers, fiberglass-reinforced containers, etc. According to their usage, common types include dry cargo containers, bulk cargo containers, refrigerated containers, open-top containers, flat rack containers, livestock containers, and tank containers (for liquid transport), among others.

03. Recent Fluctuations in the Container Shipping Market

As Levinson pointed out, the value of a shipping container lies not in what it is but in how it is utilized. These containers have extensive coverage in global trade and have established their own transportation market. From the last widespread financial crisis to the current heightened uncertainty, the container shipping market has experienced significant fluctuations.

In November this year, Shanghai Shipping Exchange released the average CCFI value of 1683.88 points, an average drop of 13.6% compared with that of the last month; the average value of the Shanghai CFI reflecting the spot market was 1389.81 points, an average drop of 22.6% compared with that of the last month. From China to Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and Japan, the freight route has been reduced to varying degrees.

Since the publication of the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) in 2009, the global container shipping market has undergone roughly four phases, and currently, we are experiencing a period of price surges followed by declines.

The success of shipping containers lies in their standardization and the comprehensive transportation systems built upon that standardization, acting as the fundamental component in maritime shipping.

Just as "The World is Flat" discusses how globalization and new technology flatten the world, the advent of shipping containers allowed goods to traverse mountains and seas, seamlessly connecting the world from one door to another.

Undoubtedly, in the era of globalization 3.0, the interaction between shipping containers and the globalization of the economy has enhanced the efficiency of the world economy and transformed human lives. Amid the challenging economic environment today, it might be more beneficial for individuals to focus on strengthening resilience for long-term benefits rather than getting caught up in short-term forecasts in times of uncertainty. Similarly, the development of the container shipping market should aim for sustainable investment, embrace green initiatives, and fortify itself against future disruptions, as highlighted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
